You don't decide by deliberating. You decide by testing. Here's the four-step on-ramp where every outcome is useful information and nothing is at stake.
1. Harness at home. Introduce a snug, vest-style harness indoors, paired with treats. Some cats accept it in a day, some need weeks — and every outcome tells you something. Don't make camping the first harness experience.
2. Short outings, short drives. Veterinarians recommend short backpack-carrier or on-leash outings to desensitize your cat to changing environments, plus brief car rides that gradually lengthen. Reward calm; most cats soon treat leaving the house as good news.
3. Pitch the tent in the living room. Set up your tent indoors or in the backyard and let your cat explore, nap, and claim it before it ever smells like wilderness. A backyard "campout" is the perfect dress rehearsal.
4. One fair-weather overnight. A single night in mild weather at a quiet, cat-friendly campground, extending trips as confidence grows — vaccinations current, parasite prevention applied, microchip registered, home routine kept intact.
Four steps. The first three happen without leaving your property. Tomorrow: the final post, and the only question that's left.
